Tamar’s Children’s Study

Tamar's Children's Study

A Woman’s Courage

Tamar was a woman who loved God, even when life was very hard. Her first husband died, and her second husband was selfish. Then her father-in-law, Judah, promised his youngest son would marry her but he lied.

Tamar waited and waited. No one helped her. So, Tamar made a brave plan. She dressed differently and sat by the road where Judah would pass. Judah didn’t recognize her. He made a promise and gave her his special seal, cord, and staff as a pledge.

When Tamar became pregnant, Judah was angry until Tamar sent him a message: “I am pregnant by the man who owns these things. Do you recognize them?”

Judah looked at the seal, cord, and staff. They were his! He said, “She is more right than I am, because I broke my promise.”

Tamar had twin baby boys! One was named Perez. Many, many years later, Jesus God’s own Son was born into Perez’s family. God used Tamar’s courage to bring the Savior into the world!

Devotional Lessons

Lesson 1: God Sees When We Are Treated Unfairly

Tamar’s first husband died, and her second husband was mean and selfish. He didn’t want to take care of her. Tamar must have felt very sad and alone. But God saw everything that happened to her. God never stopped loving Tamar.

Big Truth: God sees every tear and knows every hurt. Nothing bad that happens to us is a surprise to God.

Study Questions:

  • How do you think Tamar felt when her husbands died?
  • Does God see when someone is mean to you? How do you know?
  • Why didn’t Onan want to take care of Tamar?
  • What can you do when you feel sad and alone like Tamar?

Personal Reflection: Think of a time you were treated unfairly. Draw a picture of yourself giving that hurt to God.

Memory Verse: “The Lord watches over all who love him.” — Psalm 145:20

Lesson 2: God Helps Us Find a Way

Judah sent Tamar away and broke his promise. Tamar could have given up. Instead, she made a careful plan. She didn’t do anything wrong she just made sure Judah kept his word. God gave Tamar a clever idea.

Big Truth: When people break their promises, God can give us wisdom to do what is right.

Study Questions:

  • What promise did Judah break?
  • Tamar dressed differently. Why did she do that?
  • What did Judah give Tamar as a promise?
  • Is it okay to make a plan when someone is unfair to you? Why?

Personal Reflection: Draw a picture of a key. Write: “God gives me wisdom to solve problems.”

Memory Verse: “If any of you needs wisdom, ask God for it.” — James 1:5

Lesson 3: Standing Up for the Truth

When people found out Tamar was going to have a baby, Judah wanted to punish her. But Tamar sent him the seal, cord, and staff. “Look at these,” she said. “Do you remember them?” Judah had to tell the truth—he was the one who had broken his promise.

Big Truth: Telling the truth is brave, even when it’s scary. The truth always comes out in the end.

Study Questions:

  • Why was Judah angry at first?
  • What did Tamar send to Judah?
  • When Judah saw the things, what did he say?
  • Have you ever had to tell a hard truth? What happened?

Personal Reflection: Write about a time you told the truth even when it was hard. How did you feel afterward?

Memory Verse: “Always tell the truth.” — Ephesians 4:25

Lesson 4: God's Plan Is Bigger Than Our Problems

Tamar had twin baby boys! One was named Perez. Years and years later, Jesus was born into Perez’s family. God took Tamar’s hard, sad story and used it to bring the Savior to the whole world!

Big Truth: God can take our hardest days and turn them into something beautiful for His kingdom.

Study Questions:

  • What were the names of Tamar’s twin babies?
  • Who came from Perez’s family many years later?
  • Why is it good news that Jesus came from Tamar’s family?
  • How can God use YOUR hard days for something good?

Personal Reflection: Write or draw something hard you have gone through. Then draw a rainbow next to it to remember that God brings good after hard things.

Memory Verse: “God works all things together for good.” — Romans 8:28

Children’s Activities

  • Activity 1: Make a Seal and Cord
Give each child a small lump of clay. Let them press a button or coin into it to make a “seal.” Thread a piece of yarn through it. Remind them that Tamar kept these special items as proof.

  • Activity 2: Truth-Telling Game
Play “Two Truths and a Lie.” Each child says two true things about themselves and one false thing. The group guesses the lie. Talk about why telling the truth matters.

  • Activity 3: Family Tree Art
Draw a simple tree. At the bottom, write “Tamar” and “Perez.” At the top, write “JESUS.” Connect them with a line. Color the tree and add leaves. This shows how God used Tamar to bring Jesus
