The Canaanite Woman's Children's Study

The Woman who Wouldn’t Give Up

A little girl was very sick. Evil spirits made her sad and scared. Her mother loved her so much, but she didn’t know how to help her.

One day, her mother heard that Jesus was nearby. Jesus was a healer! He had come from far away to a place called Tyre and Sidon. The woman ran to find Him.

“Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!” she cried. “My daughter is suffering!”

But Jesus didn’t answer. His disciples said, “Tell her to go away!”

Then Jesus said something strange: “I was sent only to the lost people of Israel.”

The woman didn’t leave. She knelt down. “Lord, help me!” she begged.

Jesus said, “It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

But the woman didn’t get angry. She was humble and wise. She said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs get to eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

Jesus smiled. Her faith was so strong! “Woman, you have great faith! Your daughter is healed.”

Right at that moment, the little girl at home was completely well.

This mother never gave up. She believed Jesus could help, even when He was silent. She was humble, but she kept asking. Jesus sees every heart that trusts Him. And He always has plenty of love even crumbs enough for all.

Devotional Lessons

Lesson 1: A Mother’s Desperate Love

A little girl was very sick. Evil spirits made her sad and scared. Her mother loved her so much, so she ran to find Jesus and cried, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering!”

Big Truth: God hears us when we cry out to Him, even when we feel desperate and helpless.

Children’s Questions

  • Why was the mother sad?
  • Who did she go to for help?
  • What did she call Jesus?
  • Have you ever needed help and asked someone?

Big Ideas for Children:

  • God cares about our pain.
  • Jesus is powerful to heal.
  • A mother’s love shows us God’s love.
  • We can always pray, no matter what.

Lesson 2: When Jesus Seems Silent

At first, Jesus didn’t answer the woman. His disciples told her to go away. But the mother did not leave. She stayed and kept asking.

Big Truth: Even when God seems quiet, He hasn’t forgotten us. We should keep praying and not give up.

Children’s Questions

  • Did Jesus answer right away?
  • What did the disciples say?
  • Did the woman give up?
  • What should you do when it seems God isn’t answering?

Big Ideas for Children

  • Silence is not rejection.
  • Don’t give up when things are hard.
  • People may tell you to stop, but keep trusting God.
  • Persistence (not giving up) pleases God.

Lesson 3: Humble Faith Like a Crumb

Jesus said, “It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” But the woman humbly replied, “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” She wasn’t angry – she was wise.

Big Truth: Humility means trusting God even when we feel small. A little faith in a big God is enough.

Children’s Questions

  • What did Jesus call the people who weren’t Israelites? (He used the word “dogs” – meaning pets, not a bad name.)
  • Did the woman get mad?
  • What did she ask for instead of a whole meal? (Crumbs)
  • Is it okay to be humble and say “I need help”?

Big Ideas for Children

  • Jesus tested her faith – and she passed.
  • She was wise and humble, not proud.
  • Even crumbs from Jesus are enough to heal.
  • God lifts up those who are humble.
  • Glue tiny breadcrumbs onto a paper plate and write “Even crumbs from Jesus are enough.”

Lesson 4: Great Faith, Great Healing

Jesus smiled and said, “Woman, you have great faith! Your daughter is healed.” Right at that moment, the little girl at home was completely well. The mother believed, and Jesus made her daughter whole.

Big Truth: When we truly trust Jesus, He hears us and acts. His love is big enough for everyone – even “crumbs” of His power can heal.

Children’s Questions

  • What did Jesus call the woman’s faith? (Great faith!)
  • What happened to her daughter at that exact moment?
  • How do you think the mother felt?
  • Can you trust Jesus to help you with your worries?

Big Ideas for Children

  • Great faith gets great results.
  • Jesus can heal bodies and hearts.
  • Believing without seeing is powerful.
  • God’s love is for all people, everywhere.

Children’s Activities

  • Theme: Kindness to God’s people pleases God.

  • Build a Little Room for a Friend – Give each child a shoebox, crayons, fabric scraps and have them make a little room to show kindness to someone who teaches us about God. They can place the fabric scrap inside the box for a ‘bed.’ Encourage them to give their “little room” to a parent, pastor, or Sunday school teacher as a thank-you gift.

  • Talking Point: “When we are kind to people who love God, it’s like giving a gift to God Himself!”

Miracle Sneezes (Movement Game)

Theme: God has power over death and can do the impossible.

Remind the children that in the story, the boy sneezed seven times when he came back to life. Have the children lie down on the floor like the boy in the story, pretending to be “asleep.” Pretend to be Elisha: stretch out your hands, look up, and say, “Lord, please wake him up!” Then shout, “Sneeze number one… two… three…!” All the children “sneeze” loudly (say “Achoo!”) and jump up one by one, opening their eyes wide. Repeat seven times for fun, or let each child take a turn being “Elisha.”

Talking Point: “Only God can make a dead boy sneeze and wake up. God is stronger than anything even death!”

Run to God Race (Obstacle Course)

Theme: When trouble comes, run to God first.

What You Need: Use a small open space (living room or yard), pillows, chairs, or cushions for “obstacles”, and a picture of a Bible or a cross taped to the far wall (the “God” goal). Tell the children, “In the story, the woman’s son died. She didn’t run to anyone else. She ran straight to Elisha, God’s helper. We should run to God   first when we are scared or sad.” Set up a simple obstacle course (go around a chair, crawl over a pillow, step over a line of tape). One at a time, have each child run through the obstacle course to reach the Bible/cross picture at the end. When they reach the goal, they shout, “God, help me!” then run back to give the next child a high-five.

Talking Point: “In real life, we can’t run to God with our feet, but we can run to Him with our prayers right away, every time.”
